9-1-1 on an iqfone line

Emergency calling on this service is not the same as emergency calling on a traditional phone line. The differences below are the ones that matter when it counts. Please read them, and make sure anyone who might use your number has read them too.

The short version

9-1-1 connects, but you must say where you are, we route on the address you registered rather than where your device is, and none of it works without power and internet. Keep a mobile phone as a backup.

  1. 1.9-1-1 works on your iqfone line, and it works differently

Dialling 9-1-1 connects. Because this is an internet phone service rather than a wire to your street, your call is routed to an emergency call relay centre rather than straight to your local dispatch. A person there asks where you are and passes it to the right emergency service.

  2. 2.You must state your location out loud

The relay centre does not receive your address automatically. Say where you are as early in the call as you can, and stay on the line. If you cannot speak, the call taker has no other way to find you.

  3. 3.We route on the address you registered, not where your phone is

Your line is tied to the service address you gave us. A softphone travels and that address does not follow it. If you use your iqfone number from another city, emergency services are still working from the address on file.

  4. 4.Update your address before you move, not after

You can change it any time under Settings in the portal. The change is sent to our carrier and takes effect once they accept it — it is not instant, so do it before you need it.

  5. 5.It stops working when your internet or power does

A traditional landline draws power from the phone line itself. This service does not. A power cut, an internet outage, a failed router, or a device with a flat battery all mean no 9-1-1 from this line.

  6. 6.It stops working if your service does

If your account is suspended, cancelled, or your number is no longer active, 9-1-1 stops with it.

  7. 7.Keep another way to call for help

A mobile phone can reach 9-1-1 even with no plan and no credit. Anyone who relies on your iqfone line should have one within reach, and should know this line is not a traditional phone.

  8. 8.Tell everyone who might use the line

Family, staff, guests, and anyone in your home or office. Someone who assumes this is an ordinary phone will not know to say their address, and will not know to reach for something else if the power is out.

Keeping your address current

Your registered service address is under Settings in the portal. A line whose address our carrier has not accepted cannot place calls at all — that is deliberate, because a line that can dial out but cannot be located in an emergency is worse than one that plainly does not work yet.
